Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in ‘Odyssey’, £30 – Boots
I spoke briefly about this beautiful palette on my latest Haul video (HERE), and how disappointed my first impressions of it were. I thought I would share my disappointment with all of you even further, and maybe find out that it’s not just me or maybe I’ve been using it totally wrong :)
This is the Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in ‘Odyssey’, a gorgeous eyeshadow palette containing 4 neutral shimmery shades. This palette is part of the Clarins Christmas collection for 2012, and I fell in love with it from the moment I saw the packaging; it’s a gorgeous golden case with delicate ornate details at the front and a festive red-coloured back.
When I first opened the palette, the colours looked incredible; pretty much everything I look for in an eyeshadow palette; shades of gold, brown and champagne, very complimentary to most skin tones and super easy to wear. When I swatched the colours on my hand, I was seriously impressed, especially by the shimmery golden shade, so I really couldn’t wait to wear it!
However, the actual application of the eyeshadows was a total disaster! Using a normal flat eyeshadow brush I tried swiping, patting, pressing, and all I got was glitter everywhere and a very poor colour payoff. When I tried applying it with my fingers, I was left with chunks of unblended glitter! By that point I was so frustrated that I couldn’t get the shades to work, so I put it away and gave up for a while :(
I’m so gutted I can’t seem to get this rather expensive palette to work for me. The next step will be to try them wet; I’ve heard they look amazing when applied with a slightly damp brush. We’ll see!
So far, I’m not impressed. If you have been able to apply these colours successfully, please let me know how you did it! If you’re thinking about buying this, have a little look around other reviews before you part with your hard earned money. Considering you can pay £36 for the Urban Decay Naked Palette and you get 12 highly pigment and fuss-free eyeshadows, it might be a good idea to shop around first! :)

So refreshing reading a blogger review of a high end product that’s not totally positive and praising.
It is a lot of money to spend on an eye palette i agree, so it’s nice that helpful blogs like yours can give an honest opinion to help anyone who is thinking of purchasing. It just helps to know that more research or thought is needed before buying.
Gone are the days where i would read any popular blogger post about a product and believe the hype as so many bloggers seem to write praise for products so they don’t upset big brands who might want to send them pr samples.

Yeah, it’s definitely worth having a think about it before buying into the hype. It may worth amazingly well for you, but it just didn’t work at all for me :) x

I totally understand what you mean. I believed the hype and got completely blinded by how pretty it was and how perfect the colours looked; I’d read a million and one positive reviews and thought ‘I NEED THIS’. Unfortunately, it wasn’t worth the splurge.
I would hate for anyone else to buy this thinking it’s perfect and waste their hard earned money. Although I’m glad a lot of people like this palette and that it works for them, it does not work for me and it may not work for a lot of people out there :(

I love this palette so much. I reach for it very often and the shades look amazing on my eyelids. I can’t praise it enough. I find the applicators provided the best tools for applying the shades and if you use them slightly damp, the colour payoff is much better, but in my review I used all the colours dry and they are very pigmented on my eyelids. I am a bit confused, maybe you got a bad batch or something. You should contact Clarins and share your experience, as my experience is totally different and I absolutely love this product.

You’re not alone! I bought a palette from Clarins too and couldnt use the eyeshadows AT ALL! Such a shame it’s sitting unloved :(

Have you tried using primer before aplication? Too faced Shadow insurance of UD Primer potion?
I know it’s a lot of money, but i really don’t understand something- these products have testers on counters, you can try them before buying. When testing a shadow, try blending with your finger on hand-good shadow will keep it’s intensity and colour, and a bad one ( like these Clarins) will loose the pigment/colour or you’ll see uneven application.

I bought it online and got sucked into the hype I saw on other blogs, so I didn’t have a chance to try it before I had parted with the money. Even if I did, I only found out the eyeshadow doesn’t work when I tried applying it on my eyes; hand swatches give a general idea, but the skin on the eyelids is generally much more delicate, so the product will apply differently.
I tried UD Primer Potion but it didn’t work that well either. I just think for £30 the quality is not there; I never expected to have to battle with an expensive eyeshadow to get something out of it.

That’s definitely a shame that it didn’t work for you, I’ve had this palette for a few weeks now and the only issue I’ve had is some minor fallout with the gold. When I swatched it in store, I knew the gold would need to be treated different because the texture is so different.. reminded me of MAC’s Solar Bits or Crushed Metal pigments in pressed pan form.
I pick up the product with a flat shadow brush, mist it and then press it into the eye. If I want to really bring out the shine, I’ll then gently buff over it with a finger tip to achieve a burnished glow.

That’s such a shame that these eyeshadows aren’t working. Have you tried using a cream eyeshadow or an eyeshadow pencil as a base? It may help the eyeshadow adhere to the lids better? The colours are gorgeous though! I love how you are a very honest blogger :) xxx
