Crop top and high waisted shorts are trends that have never excited me very much – well, maybe a little in the 90s, but I was such a confident child that, back then, I didn’t really care that much what clothes I wore! Since both these trends made a come back to the fashion scene over the past 2 or 3 years, they haven’t even crossed my mind – they are not for me, I thought. Until a recent trip to Topshop after booking this year’s Summer holiday, and all I could think was: let’s see some skin!

I spotted these Tile Scarf Print Shorts and I thought they would be a versatile piece to be worn casually with flip flops, or smartly with high heels. I wanted them to be comfy and loose, so I got them in a size 10. But I wasn’t sure what I could pair them with on the top half.

Crop Top and High Waisted Shorts

I have a little wardrobe rule that if the bottom is loose, the top has to be fitted, and vice-versa. So I went looking for a fitted top, but nothing seemed to fall at the right length with these high waisted shorts. I’ve always had a bit of lower belly extra padding that I go through great lengths to hide, so any tops longer than my waist were accentuating that problem area of mine. Not cool.

So I spotted the crop tops. At first I thought I could wear this Strappy Seam Bralet under baggy jumpers and loose shirts, but then I also spotted this Bobble Lace Crop Tee, which seemed to be the perfect pairing for the bralet. I also really liked the length of the sleeves to hide my troublesome upper arms. #bingowings

I, reluctantly, took these three items to the changing rooms (along with 10 more random things I picked up on my way there) and to my surprise I really really REALLY liked the combo! The shorts were loose enough to hide any problem areas on my bottom half and they were a really nice comfortable length as well. I’m glad I went for a size 10, as that meant they weren’t tight on my waist. The top followed my loose-tight rule pretty well, and I didn’t feel too exposed. The crop top is a bit longer than the bralet, so it sits nicely just above the shorts with very little skin on show.

I’ve been wearing this outfit pretty much every time the sun comes out and I get so many compliments whenever I wear it! I feel very feminine, young and comfortable when I wear it and I’m sure this will be a staple outfit for me for the duration of Spring and Summer. This time I paired it with my Arezzo Wedges and Primark Duffle Coat as I knew we would be doing a lot of walking and standing outside in Silverstone. Of course I bought the white version of the crop top and bralet as well, and I’m already scouting for other similar shorts to add to my collection.

I never thought I would ever wear something like this and, more importantly, I never thought I would enjoy wearing something like this. I think you really have to find the exact fit and length that works best on your body, otherwise it just won’t look right. So have a little shop around, make sure you try loads of styles before you buy, and when you do find the perfect ensemble, but at least 10 of them! Just kidding… kind of :)
