Clinique Sonic System Cleansing Brush Review & How-To
September, oddly, turned out to be a month where I hardly wore any makeup! I didn’t plan this, it kind of just happened and I’ve loved giving my skin a bit of breather. Coincidentally, Clinique got in touch and offered me the opportunity to try their new nifty skincare gadget – the Clinique Sonic Cleansing Brush – which fitted in perfectly with my skin-focused month. Obviously, when there’s something new in the market, everybody goes looking for thorough reviews & pictures before they part with their money, so this is exactly what you’ll find here today.
About
The Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush is an electric brush used to deep cleanse the skin. The brush was developed with the expertise of dermatologists and it offers a gentle daily cleanse of impurities, makeup and sun cream residues, dirt and pollution. It’s waterproof, it has two types of bristles and it’s suitable for all skin types. Though I’ve never owned one, I would assume the Clinique Sonic Brush is much similar to the very popular Clarisonic, so if you’re looking for a new cleansing brush, I recommend you keep reading!
Design
The Clinique Sonic Cleansing Brush was designed to be precise, but easy to use. It comes with a charging station which connects via a USB charger included, and a full charge lasts for up to 180 minutes (3 hours); that’s pretty good, considering you’ll only be using the brush once or twice a day for 30-60 seconds at a time. The brush feels really lightweight to hold and I like that it sits flat on its back when I’m done using it.
Features
One of my favourite features is the fact that the Clinique Sonic brush is waterproof, which means you don’t have to worry about it getting wet, and you can even use it whilst showering or having a relaxing bath. It also automatically shuts off after 30 seconds so you don’t overdo and irritate your skin by mistake. You can turn it back on for another 30 seconds if you feel like it wasn’t enough time, which is what I normally do.
Bristles
The bristles have a very innovative design; the green tip is angled and it’s made of firmer bristles which helps target hard-to-reach areas and areas where the skin normally builds up more oil, such as the T-zone. The white bristles are softer and, therefore designed to be used on more sensitive areas of the face, such as the cheeks. The brush head is detachable and you can buy replacements HERE.
How To Use
The Clinique Sonic Cleansing Brush works better when used alongside with the popular Clinique 3 Step System, which comprises of a Liquid Face Wash, a Clarifying Lotion and a Moisturising Lotion. Don’t worry – they have a system to suit every skin type, and you can browse all the types available HERE; my 3 Step System is Type 1, which is targeted at Very Dry to Dry skin.
Before starting, make sure you remove all your makeup first; the Clinique Sonic cleansing brush will remove makeup residue, but it’s best to remove the bulk of your makeup first with a dedicated makeup remover.
- Step 1: First, wet the bristles so they’re slightly damp before you turn on the brush.
- Step 2: Apply the cleanser (I used Clinique Liquid Facial Soap) to the brush head or directly onto your skin.
- Step 3: Turn on the brush, and using circular motions, massage the cheeks with the white bristles. You can be very gentle with the brush, so there’s no need to press it hard onto your skin.
- Step 4: Now run the brush up and down your T-Zone using the green bristles. If the brush has automatically turned off after 30 seconds and you feel like you’re not quite finished, turn it back on for another 30 seconds.
- Step 5: Rinse and dry your face. Remember to also rinse the brush after each use.
- Step 6: Apply a gentle exfoliator. I used the Clinique Clarifying Lotion with a cotton wool pad.
- Step 7: Finish off with your favourite moisturiser. I used the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, which is quite rich, but not sticky.
Results
I’ve been using the Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush for 10 days and I’m pleased to report my skin likes it – a lot! On the first day I didn’t notice much difference, apart from the fact that immediately after the cleansing process (which only took 5 minutes!) my skin looked visibly more radiant and felt really soft. It was around the 4th day when I started to notice that my dry patches were not coming back at the end of the day and my skin generally felt smoother.
Remember what I told you about my ‘no makeup month’? I think that, combined with a deep and consistent cleansing routine, has helped my skin immensely! During these 10 days I didn’t get any break outs (which I’ve heard can be quite common with the Clarisonic) or skin irritation.
Verdict
I love it! It adds no time at all to my skincare routine and it made a big difference to how skin looks and feels. I’ve now started using the Clinique Sonic Brush twice a day (morning and evening) for 60 seconds each time. The only downside, in my opinion, is that it’s not really budget-friendly, so you might want to start your Christmas wish list early this year!

You photograph so well without a trace of makeup. I hate to see my own without the help of makeup, never mind showing it to the world.
On topic, I wish the cleansing brush was cheaper

Hi Ysis!
I would like to thank you so much for this beautiful blog! I have your same skin colour, so when I want to buy something, I always check your blog first for colour reference!
Can I ask you a review of the Revlon Nearly Naked foundation? I’ve heard that it is a wonderful dupe for the yves saint laurent le teint foundation.
Have a nice day!
