Urban Decay Naked Palette Collection – Naked 1, Naked 2, Naked 3 & Naked Basics

I realise that the last thing you need is another Naked Palette review, so I’m not giving you one; instead, since my Naked Palette collection is now complete, I decided to put them all together in one post and give you a brief overview and comparison of all four palettes. This will be a nice place to start if you’re thinking of buying either the Naked 1, 2, 3 or Basics, but don’t know which one to get. Here we go!

Packaging

I prefer the packaging of the Naked palette, despite all the others being more secure. Both the Naked 2 and 3 feel quite heavy and the eyeshadows are loosely fitted inside the palette – I’ve had problems with eyeshadows falling out of their enclosures on both the Naked 2 and 3. The Naked Basics packaging is very compact and travel-friendly, however, I almost break a nail every time I try to open it. The clasp does wear out over time, making it easier to open it, but until then, I think it’s very inconvenient to have a palette that is so difficult to open.

Eyeshadow Quality

All four Naked Palettes are extremely good quality and there isn’t much of a difference amongst them in that department. In general, the matte shades are a bit more powdery than the shimmer shades, and the lighter shades are considerably less pigmented than the darker shades. Because the Naked Basics contains mostly matte shades, you’re likely to find it more chalky than the other Naked Palettes.

Shades Selection

Each palette has a different selection of shades, so it’s not fair to declare a winner in this category – it really is down to each person’s preference. They all have eyeshadows that vary from light pinks and champagnes to dark browns and blacks. The Naked 2 and Basics both have a matte black eyeshadow; the Naked 1 and 2 both have the shade Half-Baked (my favourite), and the Naked 2 and Basics both have the shade Foxy. Because I prefer warm-toned shades, the Naked 1 palette suits me the most, but when I want to create a matte smokey eye, I opt for the Naked Basics.

Pros & Cons

  • Urban Decay Naked Palette

Pros: the eyeshadows are tightly secured; it contains the most wearable shades for my skin tone.
Cons: the magnetic closure is not secure enough; the mirror is too small; the lack of a matte black eyeshadow.

  • Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette

Pros: big mirror; the packaging is really secure.
Cons: the eyeshadows aren’t secure in the palette; bulky packaging; some shades can be unflattering on my skin tone.

  • Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette

Pros: big mirror; the packaging is really secure; the rose gold theme is very eye-catching.
Cons: the eyeshadows aren’t secure in the palette; bulky packaging; some shades can be unflattering on my skin tone.

  • Urban Decay Naked Basics

Pros: the small packaging is perfect for travelling; decent-sized mirror; good selection of light to dark shades.
Cons: the matte shades are a bit powdery; the palette is very difficult to open.

Who Is It For

As a general rule, I would say very fair-skinned people would suit the Naked 3 perfectly. If your skin has cool undertones, you’re better matched with the Naked 2. If you have warm undertones, you will find the Naked 1 more useful. If you wear very little or basic makeup most of the time, the Naked Basics will cover your needs.

Summary & Conclusion

Overall, the Urban Decay Naked 1, 2, 3 and Basics are all very good eyeshadow palettes that cater to people with different needs. I’m a palette-junkie, so I had to buy them all, but a ‘normal’ person would be just fine with only one of these palettes. All you have to do to decide which one is right for you, is list your priorities, what you look for in a palette, and see which one ticks the most boxes. If you have any more questions, feel free to leave them below and I’ll do my best to help! :)
