Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms (Review, Swatches & Photos)
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms, £7.99
Where to buy: Boots
Don’t ask me how I managed to totally miss the launch of these beauties back in the end of January, but on a recent trip to Boots I spotted them and let me tell you, it was hard to leave with only 3 in my hands (yeah, I did just say ‘only’ – so bad, I know!). Thankfully, they are currently on a 3 for 2 offer in Boots, so I picked my 2 favourites and a wildcard, which is a shade I wouldn’t normally go for. Let me show you what they look like up close and personal.
The Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm comes in a lip crayon form, and it’s much like its predecessor, the ever so popular Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, except it’s matte and with a velvet finish. I like how they coordinate the packaging with the shade and finish of the lip balm – it definitely makes it easier to stop the ones you want at a glance. The crayon has a twist up and down kind of base, so there’s no need to sharpen it or worry about twisting it up too much.
The Matte Balms come in 10 shades, all matte as the name suggests, with an amazing variety of colours! The shades are: Complex, Shameless, Standout, Elusive, Audacious, Sultry, Unapologetic, Mischievous, Striking and Showy. I ended up only getting Complex, Elusive and Standout, despite wanting Sultry and Unapologetic really badly – I might have to go back for them!
I found that the formula varied from balm to balm, but overall they are very pigmented, creamy and they dry matte on the lips with a velvet finish and become pretty much non-transferable to touch. Some are more drying than others on the lips, especially the lighter shades. They are also slightly fragranced and cooling on the lips, which I found quite pleasant.
Complex is a peachy brown nude; it can be a bit patchy and drying on the lips. I don’t like this shade on me, as I think it makes me look a bit dead and lifeless, but it’s a nice nude shade for paler complexions.
Elusive is a light cool-toned rose pink; it’s my favourite shade of the bunch and the formula applies a lot more evenly than Complex. Also, contrary to Complex, this shade instantly perks up my complexion and brightens up my face.
Standout is a berry red; it’s the most moisturising and least patchy on the lips. I’m totally in love with this shade; it’s the closest thing I own to a neutral red and it dries super quickly, so I don’t end up with lipstick on my teeth.
I can definitely recommend these if you’re a fan of matte lips. These felt quite similar on the lips to the Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Matte Lipsticks, but they are a bit less long-lasting and easier to work with, which makes them easier for touch-ups. Now I have my eyes on Sultry and Unapologetic – I’m coming for ya!

To be honest with you, they all look gorgeous on you Ysis!!! but the Elusive suits you the most and looks versatile because you can wear it all day :) the nude one doesn’t look too pale on you in picture though and the red one is so gorgeous and bold :)

Thank you, Cassandra! It’s nice to know you think Complex looked ok; I wasn’t too sure, just because it’s so nude, but I’ll give it another chance before putting it in the ‘unwanted’ pile :) Thanks for your kind words! xx
Catherine

Thank you, Catherine. It’s such a pretty rose pink! I think it’s one of the most universal shades of the bunch :)

Love all of these! Great review, you suit all of them and I don’t think complex washes you out too much! Really want elusive though.

I took advantage of the 3 for 2 offer in Boots too (a girl’s got to do, what a girl’s got to do :D) I picked up Audacious and Striking along with a Lacquer Balm in Vivacious. I have yet to try matte shades so I’m really looking forward to trying them out. Although I wish I purchased Elusive and Standout too. They look absolutely amazing on you Ysis. They look so beautiful on your complexion even Complex (you make for one gorgeous corpse. lol but kidding aside, I don’t think it makes you look dead, it has enough warmth to stop it being too pale crazy) :) I need to get my hands on Standout as soon as my purse can take another beating, that is ;)

I’ve not tried the Revlon ones but i LOVE the Rimmel colour balms – they’re so creamy but I think where they differ is the Rimmel ones don’t dry matte. x

Yeah, I’ve tried the Rimmel ones and I found them to be sheer compared to the Revlon ones. These are my absolute favourite colour balms! :)

You look gorgeous in all the colors! I think I need that color Elusive, its so pretty! Since it is blue toned, will it look okay on warm skin tones?
Ash
I absolutely love all of these shades, but can you please tell me what color blush you’re wearing? It is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you!

I have this in elusive and sultry and I think you should try sultry! It doesn’t accentuate the lip lines. Great review! :)
