Festival Makeup Tutorial: Pink Smokey Eye

Festival Makeup Tutorial Glowing Skin and Pink Smokey Eye

When Elf contacted me asking if I wanted to get involved in their Festival Makeup Tutorial Challenge, of course, I jumped at the chance! Elf is one of my favourite affordable makeup brands and I’ve never done a Festival makeup tutorial before, so it was the perfect opportunity. Now, this may come as surprise, but I’ve never been to a festival before – no jokes! However, I’ve always been interested in the colourful makeup looks and the casual boho hairstyles I see popping up every year around the festival season.

I wanted to do something fun, but still stay true to my own style, which is mostly classic and conservative, kind of romantic and sultry at the same time. So I opted for glowy skin and a pink smokey eye, which I’m absolutely obsessed with! I hope you like the tutorial :)

Step 1: Foundation

I used the Elf HD Mattifying Cream Foundation* in the shade Buff, which works really well when applied with your fingers, so it’s great for applying your makeup quickly and on-the-go. I was very pleased with this foundation (I’ll do a separate review later this week!) – it has a matte finish and it gives you a very good medium coverage. The shade Buff is very similar in colour to my Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 5.5, but more pink-toned. It’s one shade darker than my current skin tone, but after I blended it into my neck and chest, it looked absolutely fine.

Step 2: Concealer

Next, I used he Elf Tone Correcting Concealer* in the shade Light Beige to hide my dark circles and redness, and to highlight the high points of my face (bridge of my nose, chin and forehead). This concealer is very light, creamy and super easy to blend. It looks natural on the skin and I also used my fingers for this, making the whole process a lot quicker. The shade Light Beige is a good all-round shade on my skin for hiding blemishes and brightening my dark circles.

Step 3: Bronzer & Blush

The Elf Baked Blush* in Rich Rose is a great multi-purpose product. First, I used it to contour and bronze up my skin by swirling the brush all over the pan, mixing both shades together. Then, focusing more on the rose shade, I applied it onto the apples of my cheeks to add a healthy pinch of colour to my skin.

Step 4: Highlighter

To highlight I used the Elf All Over Color Stick* in Persimmon on my cheekbones, chin, forehead and on the bridge of my nose; pretty much the same places I had previously used the Tone Correcting concealer. The shade Persimmon has a pink-undertone to it, so if you have olive skin with warm or neutral undertones and you want your highlighter to look natural, don’t overdo it.

Step 5: Base Colour

For my eyes, I used the three pink-toned shades from the first column of the Elf 48 Piece Little Black Beauty Book* (Cool Edition). I started with the 3rd shade, a shimmery champagne rose shade, all over the lid; I used a flat eyeshadow brush to press the eyeshadow on my eyelid in order to get a rich rose base colour for this smokey eye.

Step 6: Transition Colour

Next, I used a thin blending brush to apply the 4th shade, which was my transition colour, into my crease. This shade is totally matte and slightly darker than the first shade I applied, but still keeps in with the pink-theme.

Step 7: Crease Colour

To darken the outer corner of my eye and make the smokey eye look more intense, I used the 5th shade, a darker pink with golden shimmer, on a big fluffy brush and blended that colour just on the outer half of my lids.

Step 8: Lower Lash Line

I used a combination of the 4th shade and the matte black shade on the 4th column of the palette to line my lower lash line. This keeps the makeup looking soft, whilst still adding definition to the eyes. I made sure to blend the line really well and link it up with the smokey eye by dragging a thin diagonal line from the lower lash line towards my eyebrow.

Step 9: Eyebrows

Using a small eyeliner brush, I filled in my eyebrows very lightly with the matte black eyeshadow on the 4th column of the palette.

Step 10: Upper Lash Line

I used the Elf Liquid Eyeliner* in Black to line my upper lash line, then with a small eyeliner brush, I smudged that harsh line to make it look softer. This method works really well if you, like me, suffer from the dreaded ‘shaky hands syndrome’ when applying liquid eyeliner. You can still get the intensity of the liquid eyeliner, but you can easily cover up any imprecision mistakes.

Step 10: Mascara

After curling my lashes, I applied two coats of the waterproof mascara from the Elf Regular & Waterproof Mascara Duo* on my top and bottom lashes. This mascara is very good at separating the lashes whilst adding the right amount of volume. Because it’s not too wet, it’s easy to build up more than one coat without it looking clumpy.

Step 11: Lips

I went back with the Elf All Over Color Stick in Persimmon, and dabbed it onto my lips to add a soft shimmery pink colour. I love how versatile this product is; you can use it as a highlighter, eyeshadow or lip colour. Last but not least, I applied the Elf Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15* in Honey Do over the top. This lipgloss feels really thick and moisturising on the lips, and I love it that it’s not too sticky. Also, it smells and tastes really good.

And that’s my finished Festival makeup look! :) I know it’s not your traditional ‘festival’ makeup, but I think it’s a good way to incorporate colour into your makeup if you’re not used to it. The pink smokey eye is something a bit more interesting than the average brown & golds, and it’s perfect for Spring & Summer! A massive thank you to Elf for proving me with the makeup to create this look!

To go with the makeup, I curled my hair using the Babyliss Pro Perfect Curl*, and placed a headband over my head up to my temples. Then I twisted the ends of the curls into the headband and finished off with some hairspray. Such a pretty and quick festival-style updo – let me know if you want to see a hair tutorial on it :)
